The integration of Artificial Intelligence into the humanities research pipeline offers a significant opportunity to rethink our methodologies. By adopting AI, humanities researchers can reduce their reliance on often inflexible, pre-packaged tools or external technical teams, paving the way for smaller, more autonomous, and efficient research groups. However, applying these powerful technologies, especially in qualitative work, is problematic without a clear understanding of their current capabilities and limitations. Therefore, this session will first demystify the underlying mechanics of how LLMs work before moving to practical examples of AI in action. Finally, we will discuss strategies for studying these tools critically and using them wisely, ensuring that the researcher remains entirely in control of the research process.
